You have $500 to build the best "set and forget" watering / grow system. What do you buy?
You have a 4x4 tent, a good light, and lots of fans. You also have a 55 gallon drum and a 13 gallon drum. What do you buy to build the best system that you can truly set and forget and not have to worry about feeding?
Made a "set and forget" (sort of) propagation setup. The bottom tray is for the water reservoir, and the upper tray with holes allow wicks to pass through to reach the water. Basically, a self watering system.

[Advice] Forget ‘routines’; what you need is ‘systems’. Systems ensure that the right things are done reliably and effectively - not just any set of things
We all have routines. A routine is just a sequence of habits we do on autopilot. Often, we weren’t deliberate in creating them, we just fell into them. A system is different. A system is a routine designed to achieve a specific result. Systems ensure that the right things are done reliably and effectively - not just any set of things. Routines may be accidental; but systems are always deliberate. Routines are part of a system, but a system is not part of a routine. Routines are boring by themselves but, with a larger vision in mind, they become exciting. Results are exciting. Once you create routines that help you achieve a larger vision, you’ve created a system. That’s why people say ‘start with why’ or ‘find your why’. You’re not going to stick with a routine if you don’t know why you’re doing it. Once you know what you’d like to achieve and why you’d like to achieve it, following a routine becomes much easier - it’s now part of a system; there’s more meaning behind it. We all have routines, but we don’t all have systems. Call to action: if there are certain habits you’re trying to cultivate, ask yourself why. Write down the answers. If you don’t know why, maybe you’d be better off focusing on something else. Edit:

Forget Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, I have an idea for a rugged $10 handheld system
Now that the digital hardware trends have been leading us towards bigger and more power hungry devices that aren't quite built to last, even though we can do much better than that with the technology that we've come to now, I got an idea. Why aren't we bringing back the idea of gameboy, tamagotchi, or even LCD game watch into the 2020s? When I mention a gameboy like modern console, I think the first thing that comes to most people's mind are the Arduboy and Playdate. The Arduboy is a great product made of completely off the shelf parts, but unfortunately the maximum file size allowed for the games is measly 32KB, the amount of internal flash storage it has, and it's still not as cheap as I'd like. The Playdate has a disappointingly dim screen, high price, mediocre battery life, small and cramped buttons, and a crank control which I have a mixed feelings of. I think they're okay products, but I don't have much a reason to get them when handheld emulators exist, and my phone has better battery life and more games anyway. I think we can do better than this. So last year, I came across this thing. The ENGAGE, a battery free gameboy emulator. It is an interesting concept, a gameboy emulator that never runs out of power, since it harnesses power from button presses. That sounds cool, but I'm questioning the feasibility of it, like turning buttons into power generator. Wouldn't such a thing have durability issue? Can we easily fix and replace them when they're worn out? And how could we build this thing at a cheap price? It sounds expensive. So I looked into the technical stuff, and it caught my interest how the whole system only consumes 11.5mW of power, with the screen only consuming 0.3 mW. It's a reflective LTPS screen, which means it has no backlight and consumes very little power. With that much power efficiency, I think there's much to gain from making it non battery powered. You could put in a couple of AA alkaline batteries and they would power the console nonstop for a week. However I think we could do even better than that. What if we actually made a gameboy or wonderswan-like console with modern technology? By replacing the 32 bit MCU in that gameboy emulator with a modern low cost 16 bit PIC or Renesas MCU, we would achieve a maximum power consumption of 4.8 mW 3V at 8MHz. That would be a whopping 33 days with a single AA alkaline cell, or 65 days with two of them. Of course MCU wouldn't be the only thing the device needs, so I made a small list of the parts that would be included in it. Note that I'm not a computer expert or an electrical engineer hence I have little clue of what would be needed, but I did a little research, and this is what I came up with.
The 16-bit MCU, with as many pins as possible like 96 or 128, it would be the heart of the console. Renesas sells them for less than $1 in a bulk, probably even less if it's possible to replace the flash memory inside with a mask rom. That would make the MCU more reliable rugged also.
The screen, a low resolution reflective LTPS LCD screen with black and white screen to minimize the pins needed for the display, so we wouldn't need another MCU for that. I might be wrong here though. An alternative would be an STN LCD screen, it would be cheaper but the image would be less sharp and any movement might produce a ton of ghosting. I'm not sure where you could get either one of them for a low price, they're pretty rare nowadays, but they should be really cheap to manufacture.
The LED frontlight, since the screen is reflective, you gotta need to turn on that frontlight when you play in the dark. Sort of like the GBA SP.
The RAM, a Infineon 4Mbit 2.2V SRAM, my idea is to dump the entire game's data from an external flash storage into this low power RAM so that the console would consume very little power while running the game. SRAM also consumes very little power while dormant, which means the memory would be retained when the system is turned of. 512KB is more than enough for beefy black and white games. That would be around $2-3 in a bulk according to mouser.
1 or 2 channel audio IC. It would sound like doorbells I guess, better than nothing.
Bluetooth and 64MB flash storage module to transfer the game from a phone app. I'm thinking of a storefront app for community developed games you could send via bluetooth into this console. No piracy protection of course.
Mask ROM game cartridge, an alternative for the bluetooth and flash module. I think it would be nice to re-release the most popular games on cartridges, just like the nintendo switch carts, many would try to get their hands on it, and it wouldn't be quite as vulnerable to piracy or bit rotting.
2 or 3 alkaline batteries to power the device. The first two battery would be essential to run the whole system, and the last one would only power the frontlight LED, bluetooth, and speakers, you could still play games without it. Those two batteries should have enough power for at least a month of constant operation while the last one should provide enough for 20-30 hours or so.
An optional crank power generator with a small ultracapacitor power storage unit, sold separately. Now you can play it forever without a single battery.
Simple plastic dome silicone buttons. The layout consists of two dpads on each side (great for twin stick shooters), two shoulder buttons on each side, and one start button. Having a dedicated switch to let the player seamlessly switch between left handed and right handed controls would be wonderful.
And that's the reason this handheld system would be really cheap and long, long lasting. 16 bit CPU, black and white screen, and no lithium battery. This is the kind of system that would survive the post apocalypse while offering more modern and better games than the original gameboy. A bulk of the games should be community made, and development tools (game engine, assembler, emulation software) would have to be provided for free, although the killer apps would be professionally made. With 512KB you could create action RPGs or Sim City clones, that's as much space as the biggest NES games and IBM 8086 PC games used. I don't know whether this is a brilliant idea or I'm just a delusional idiot, but I'm really fond of this idea of a cheap and rugged console that lasts a century. I have obsession with environmentally friendly products, electronics for the masses, and entertainment devices that could survive the collapse of a power grid or even the entire human civilisation. Sure brick game and tiger LCD are all of those, but who could play them for more than 3 minutes? And that's where the idea stems from. So anyway, I thank anyone who wasted their precious time to read my poorly grammared and meandering essay lol, and I appreciate every valuable input.

How many “set and forget” guys do you have in your lineup?
Of course the answer will vary. There is a finite and universal “this guy is set and forget in EVERY lineup,” but depending on your bench a lesser guy might be your best option and thus to YOUR team and in your opinion he might qualify as set and forget. How many of these set and forgets do you have and who are they?
For the next 2 years, I will spend $3/hour auto purchasing BTC via Strike. Every week I’ll push the week’s worth of BTC to my ledger and reload my account, limiting my exchange/third party exposure to just over $500 at any given time while minimizing fees. That is all. From what I can tell SwanBTC is another good platform for this purpose. Compared to Strike it is less work but higher fees. SwanBTC offers a true set it and forget it mode for those who really want to check out. Ultimately I’m ok with checking in weekly with Strike as it has the lowest fees I’ve come across. Hope this helps some folks looking to DCA into BTC Edit: I have info about the nitty gritty costs and criteria I used to choose services in this old post I made a few months back
Celebrating 1 year as a Boglehead investor, but still obsessing over my investments, asset allocation, returns, and money in general. I've mastered "set it" but I can't seem to "forget it." Any tips?
So, I found this sub about 13 months ago and read "A Bogleheads Guide to Investing" in a single sitting. It all made sense, and I was on board from the get-go. After reading that book, I unloaded all the nonsense in my brokerage account for a two-fund portfolio (no bonds since I'm in my mid-20's and will have a pension) and, despite being down about 15% since then, I haven't looked back. But ever since then it feels like I've somehow become even more obsessed with tracking my investment progress than when I was actively trading. I'm checking the price of $VTI and $VXUS 5x per day, trying to find ways to squeeze extra money out of my budget to scrape a few dollars out to invest, even though I'm maxing both my TSP/IRA (no HSA with my plan). This probably stems from learning exactly how much every dollar can turn into if you just sock it away. It's unfortunately eating up a lot of my mental bandwidth, and I want to tune out and let my money sit and do all the heavy lifting. John Bogle always said "don't peek" but when all my money is a tap away on my phone, it's easy to give in. Any advice on how to let go of this unhealthy behavior?
